ABOUT DEBBIE
Debbie Toluba has been creative all her life, but in 2021 she found a new passion for mixed media art. Her work bursts with energy, texture, and layers of possibility—each piece often beginning with a few inspired colors before evolving into vibrant compositions where paint, paper, and collage elements dance together. She especially loves the endless experimentation that comes with working in mixed media, from layering torn papers to creating unexpected combinations. Beyond her own art, Debbie is a true community cheerleader, always encouraging others to explore their creativity and celebrating the artistic spirit in those around her.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“When my days are spent making art, I am happier and there is a sense of peace that fills my heart. Since beginning to make art regularly in 2021, my studio has become a place to retreat and emerge transformed.
I look at the creation of a collage as a hunting and gathering process in which I find great delight in layering just the right combinations of materials. Putting together a collage mirrors my love of doing puzzles. All those pieces of mixed media are laid out around me and I get rising satisfaction as all the collage materials work toward completion.
As my art practice began, I experimented abstractly with acrylics, with the initial results being brightly-colored art with lots of circles and dots. Now that my style is evolving, new color palettes are emerging with more intentional mixed media layers and detail. However, geometric patterns remain a recurring theme.
Experiencing my artwork encourages one to draw nearer, be still for a moment, and look closely. Each of us can benefit from spending pockets of time that way. “
